Strand Unit: Study of the Vikings
From the eighth century onwards, the Vikings travelled far and wide. They traded with many nations, but they also raided foreign lands, stealing goods and treasures.
In 795 AD the Vikings made their first recorded landing on Rathlin Island and they soon began to land on the eastern shores of Ireland. By following river courses, to penetrate into the country, they establishing themselves in many areas. They found a country with no overall ruler whose fragmented kingdoms were constantly in dispute. The Vikings fought for and seized land and territory, initially by force, later by a mixture of military means and by establishing alliances.
